A quick trip to the allotment and 1st harvest!

Even though the heat was unbearable and we were sweating our butts off, we spent a good 40 mins at the allotment on Sunday. We were the ONLY people there, that should have told us something, plus in the end Toby was far too warm as well- so homeward bound we were...

our plot - Carrie Gault 2018
The plot was a dried out weedy mess but we love it and though we'd give it our best go....

courgette flower - Carrie Gault 2018
Lots of courgette flowers appearing now - hurrah and though now photographed here, our sweetcorn is looking strong and healthy.

A few garlic cloves - Carrie Gault 2018
These were just a few early garlic cloves we lifted, they were small but later we found them to be so delicious

Our first potato harvest - Carrie Gault 2018
Our first planter pot of potatoes was harvested and we were really, pleaseantly surprised. With all this crazy heatwave action and no rain, we thought they would be tiny and disappointing but no, they were small and utterly tasty. Most went to Mamma G, as you are reading this I am hiking again in  Fermanagh ;)

The wasps' nest in the bird box by the the shed door - Carrie Gault 2018
Oh my! We have wasps nesting in my remaining bird box. They didn't bother us at all and are of course goo for the plants but it was disturbing to hear later that other people had taken theirs and burnt them to death - why?
I think we all need to rethink our relationship with the wasp - education is key.

the plot when we left - Carrie Gault 2018
A wheelbarrow full of weeds later, with the front half of the right hand bed really for leeks to be planted later in the week. Really, considering Toby getting sickly and we needing a cold shower as soon as we got home - we did good!

harvest trug!! - Carrie Gault 2018
A harvest trug :)
Garlic, broad beans, potatoes and rainbow chard - yumm!

Hugs galore!
Carrie

  1. Wasps are fascinating if kept at a distance but their stings are painful if you inadvertently stumble into conflict with them. As you say they are good for the garden, that os until the fruit is ripening.

    1. oh I hear you about those stings! I accidentally put my arm down on one and the pain was terrible. I was only wee but I remember it well. Plus, it would me nice if they stayed away from the apples and blueberries. They haven't bothered yet. I really must read up more on them but I would never burn a colony.

    1. it's not so bad as I feared; we are hoping to get there over the N.Irish twelfth holidays and stay away from the crowds. Happy plotting to you too, you lovely man.

  3. You all did amazingly well considering you are not used to heat .. I know it must have been hard but well done !! .. what a great little harvest already .. it must be so satisfying !
I hope Toby is ok ... it really can impact the little furry creatures so much with heat.
I still am VERY leery about wasps ... but I get what you are saying too .. some times we are too quick to judge and react... just human nature I guess ?
Hope the hiking is going well ! Take care !!

    1. Oh boy, neither of us are sun and heat lovers - we're definitely more into Spring and Autumn and this heatwave is brutal. Though, I shouldn't complain :)
I think we are all weary of wasps because of what they are capable of - the pain is intense but we're not for a mass burning right now. xx

  4. The plot is just gorgeous. I'm amazed everything looks so lush given your hot weather + no rain. So jealous of your tasty spuds. Good for you both for getting something done even in that heat.

    1. Thank goodness for watering cans and growing the spuds in plastic pots. We really didn't expect much from the container. We have a hosepipe ban but the weather is set to change a while here and then the sun will return. Thank you for understanding that the heat was too much for us - for you, it would be normal temperatures! haha xxx

  5. Freaky hot here - 24C this evening.
Today at the beach all the dogs were enjoying being in or near the water.
